چکیده
The congruence between two configurations of points quantifies their similarity. The configurations to be compared are, in general, produced by factor analytic methods which decompose an “observations by variables” data matrix and produce one set of factor scores for the observations and one set of factor scores (i.e., the “loadings”) for the variables. The congruence between two sets of factor scores collected on the same units (which can be observations or variables) measures the similarity between these two sets of scores. If, for example, two different types of factor analysis are performed on the same data set, the congruence between the two solutions is evaluated by the similarity of the configurations of the factor scores produced by these two techniques.

RV Coefficient and Congruence Coefficient
The congruence coefficient was first introduced by Burt (1948) under the name of unadjusted correlation as a measure of the similarity of two factorial configurations. The name congruence coefficient was later tailored by Tucker (1951, see also Harman, 1976). The congruence coefficient is also sometimes called a monotonicity coefficient (Borg & Groenen, 1997, p. 203). The congruence coefficient...
متن کامل“Responsiveness” as a Measure of Representation
The study of representation requires being able to measure representation. The concept to be measured, in the abstract, is the distance or “congruence” between legislators and their constituents, but data limitations often preclude measuring congruence directly. A popular alternative is to regress legislator roll call votes on a proxy for constituent preferences, with the coefficient labeled “r...
متن کاملTucker’s Congruence Coefficient as a Meaningful Index of Factor Similarity
When Tucker’s congruence coefficient is used to assess the similarity of factor interpretations, it is desirable to have a critical congruence level less than unity that can be regarded as indicative of identity of the factors. The literature only reports rules of thumb. The present article repeats and broadens the approach used in the study by Haven and ten Berge (1977). It aims to find a crit...
متن کاملHow similar are they? rethinking electoral congruence
Electoral continuity and discontinuity have been a staple of voting research for decades. Most researchers have employed Pearson’s r as a measure of congruence between two electoral outcomes across a set of geographic units. This paper argues that that practice should be abandoned. The correlation coefficient is a measure of linearity, not similarity, and is almost always the wrong measure. The...
متن کاملLucas-type Congruences for Cyclotomic Ψ-coefficients
Let p be any prime and a be a positive integer. For l, n ∈ {0, 1, . . . } and r ∈ Z, the normalized cyclotomic ψ-coefficient {n r } l,pa := p − ⌊ n−pa−1−lpa pa−1(p−1) ⌋ ∑ k≡r (mod pa) (−1) (n k )( k−r pa l ) is known to be an integer. In this paper, we show that this coefficient behaves like binomial coefficients and satisfies some Lucas-type congruences. This implies that a congruence of Wan i...
